Type Tamer is now supporting the Iomega 100Mb Zip drive disk format. We believe these drives will become very popular as an inexpensive way to store and transport data. Although they hold less than a 3.5" Syquest cartridge, they are much cheaper (less than $30 each and about $240 for a pack on ten). They also seem to be a bit more robust for shipping than a Syquest.
The drives themselves cost around $300. (Shop around!) and are available as an external unit, which connects via SCSI or a parallel port adaptor depending upon which model drive you buy. SCSI will offer faster performance, whereas the parallel interface will allow you to move your drive between different computers with ease.
Syquest are no longer manufacturing 3 inch 105/270mb drives. Cartridges will continue to be available for existing users.
Syquest have been busy though with the recent release of several new removable cartridge products: a 1.3 gigabyte drive called SyJet and the EZFlyer which is a 230mb drive. The EZFlyer is backward compatible with their EZ135 drive.
Buyers beware: rumour has it that the EZ products are compatible with 270mb Syquests - this is not true!)
We mention these new Syquest products for interest only, TT is not yet supporting the new either SyJet or EZ drives. We will continue to accept both Syquest 3.5 and 5.25 Syquest formats. If you think we should be taking more interest - talk to us...
